A fabulously uncooperative late September day saw the sun rise gloriously resembling a mid summer morning, fabulous on any given picnic type shoot with family nestling on a rug enjoying sandwiches however the topic was a warming winter soup projected onto a landscape of a club of open water swimmers swimming in a frozen lake in mid winter.

The ladies race through a forest followed by a drone camera from above then cut to a front shot of them laughing as they run. Soon enough they find a small jetty and one by one run along its length and jump into the freezing fresh water of Black Park Lake near Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

I am tasked with tracking the ladies as they plunge into the water from the water line shooting one by one as they dive, star jump and bomb. Waves roll up and over my DSLR set up rig and I swim up close picking the best combination of shots as I can with the randomness of the action as it unfolds. Underwater shots were originally required but unfortunately the visibility in the lake was next to zero so that proved impossible as nothing at all could be seen underwater.

Most of the action I realised was going to be one off and unrepeatable and I was mindful of not getting in the eye line of the main camera operating on a boat floating nearby.

The woods up to the shoreline were sprayed with a false snow type effect making it look like a winters day, and then the final ad was graded with a cold filter to finish the effect.

The camera rig was my original and first Nikon D800 in Seacam housing shot at 25fps, exposure had to be carefully applied as strong sunshine was beating down for most of the day.

The end result is a fabulously optimistic ad, enough to warm the cockles of your heart on the coldest of days.
